Internships

The New York Historical offers internships in both our Museum and Library divisions for college and graduate-level students. From modeling creative exhibition layouts to researching with our curators and educators, our interns experience unparalleled career development and cultivate fruitful professional relationships.

College and Graduate Internships

Applicants who are selected to participate in this rewarding, yet demanding experience will be paid an hourly rate of $17.00. The part-time Summer internship program is hybrid and will run June 9 through August 14, 2026, unless otherwise specified. Interns may work up to 180 hours throughout the duration of the program.

Requirements

Applicants should be undergraduate or graduate students though recent graduates may also apply. Please see individual descriptions for department specific requirements. Interns are considered employees, and upon acceptance into the program are required to provide documentation that they are legally allowed to work in the United States. International students may apply and are responsible for providing the same documentation and obtaining the necessary visas.

Available Positions

Center For Women’s History Internship

The Summer 2026 Center for Women’s History intern will work collaboratively with the Director, staff, and fellows across our broad range of public history projects, including exhibitions and installations, our blog, research in The Historical’s museum and library collections, and our public programs.

Collections Internship

The Summer 2026 Collections intern will gain insight into the varied undertakings of a Collections Department. The intern will work with the Exhibitions Registrars to help with planning for exhibitions and assisting with install and deinstall as necessary, and work with the Museum DBA to improve object catalog records with the goal of improving consistency, findability, and online display.

Family Programs Internship

The Summer 2026 Family Programs intern will conduct research and create activities for summer programs, including Independence Day and the opening celebrations for our new Museum wing, and become an integral member of our summer camp team. They will assist with marketing; administrative tasks; preparing materials for programs; and staffing our summer camp, as well as a variety of other family programs for The New York Historical and DiMenna Children’s History Museum.

Zimmermann Decorative Arts Internship For Graduate Students

The New York Historical is excited to continue offering an internship funded by the Marie Zimmermann Foundation, designed to provide hands-on experience for graduate students and recent graduates with a strong interest in American decorative arts and material culture.

The Summer 2026 Zimmermann intern will participate in the hands-on examination and cataloging of collection objects, conduct detailed design, technology, and social history research for new acquisitions and artifacts earmarked for inclusion in upcoming exhibitions, compose blogs related to collection objects and their experiences working with such material, and assist curators in artifact-based presentations.
