New York City’s gay community frequented the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar established in 1967. After years of police harassment, patrons rallied to resist a raid in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969. The uprising galvanized thousands of community members to advocate for their civil rights, sparking a new era in the LGBTQ+ liberation movement.
Manufactured by the Empire Brick and Supply Company, this brick from the original facade of the Stonewall Inn was donated by the current owners Kurt Kelly and Stacy Lentz in 2024. It's part of the collection of the American LGBTQ+ Museum, which will be opening within The New York Historical in 2026 as part of the Tang Wing for American Democracy.
Exhibitions at The New York Historical are made possible by Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar Tang, the Saunders Trust for American History, the Evelyn & Seymour Neuman Fund, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
