Welcome to our new home for democracy education.
In 2026, the United States of America commemorates the 250th anniversary of its birth. Here in New York, the nation’s original capital and its great economic and intellectual hub, America’s 250th birthday is especially meaningful. It is fitting that The New York Historical—New York’s first museum and one of the earliest cultural institutions in the United States—has led the charge to celebrate this historic moment. The stunning Tang Wing for American Democracy, befitting The New York Historical's legacy as an architectural icon in New York, completes the institution’s majestic architectural complex on Central Park West. Designed by Robert A. M. Stern, our brand-new 71,000- square-foot wing will serve as a beacon for democracy education, a powerhouse of inclusive history, and a home for history enthusiasts of all backgrounds and perspectives.
Alongside new gallery and outdoor spaces, the new wing serves as the home for The New York Historical's Chang Chavkin Academy for American Democracy and Dorothy Tapper Goldman Center for Teaching Democracy. With the expanded resources provided by the new wing, we are able to increase the number of students in the Chang Chavkin Academy for American Democracy tenfold, from 3,000 to 30,000 annually, and can dramatically increase the number of educators reached through the Dorothy Tapper Goldman Center for Teaching Democracy.
The new wing also houses our renowned Patricia D. Klingenstein Library collection. The New York Historical’s Patricia D. Klingenstein Library is one of the oldest, most distinguished research libraries in the United States and a vital center of research into the history of New York and the nation. The top floor of the new wing will eventually be home to the American LGBTQ+ Museum, telling the story of the long struggle for full American citizenship for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

An Architectural Icon
Designed by Robert A. M. Stern, the six-story structure on West 76th Street adds 71,000 square feet to our landmark campus. The expansion was constructed of granite from Deer Isle, Maine—excavated from the same quarry that provided the stone of our already existing building 114 years ago—creating a seamless, grand facade.
Klingenstein Family Gallery
The stunning, first-floor main gallery of the new Tang Wing serves as a flexible space for various events and changing exhibitions.
Chang Chavkin Academy for American Democracy
The new Tang Wing provides state-of-the-art classroom space for the Chang Chavkin Academy for American Democracy, our award-winning initiative for 6th graders that's designed to address critical knowledge gaps in the learning of American history. Our new wing allows us to increase the number of students served from 3,000 to 30,000 annually. All participating New York City public school students will receive a DTG Freedom Pass, which provides one-year of Family-level membership access to The New York Historical.
Stuart and Jane Weitzman Shoe Museum
Among the new Tang Wing’s first-floor galleries, the Weitzman Shoe Museum enchants fashion enthusiasts with the celebrated Weitzman shoe collection.
Dorothy Tapper Goldman Center for Teaching Democracy
The new wing also provides crucial space for our Dorothy Tapper Goldman Center for Teaching Democracy, where teachers come together with scholars and museum professionals to dive deeply into history, political theory, and engaging pedagogy.
The Leni and Peter May Conservation Studio
The Tang Wing also includes a state-of-the-art science facility for the conservation and restoration of rare and precious documents and other materials from the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library as well as paintings and other artworks from the Museum Division. Conceived and designed by Samuel Anderson, widely considered the preeminent architect of conservation studios, the studio provides space for a team of four museum and library conservators using the most advanced technology to preserve this singular collection.
