Bon Appétit: French Cuisine in American Culture

Event Details:
For centuries, France ruled supreme in Western high culture, with French art, fashion, and design held in the highest regard everywhere from the royal courts of Europe to the American colonies. In the centuries following France’s alliance with America during the Revolutionary War, French influence continued to flourish in the nation’s developing cultural identity. One key area where this is most evident is in the prominence of French cuisine. From the French chefs employed by presidents and Founding Fathers, to Julia Child’s iconic 1961 cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, dig into the history of French food in American culture with culinary historian Alex Prud’homme, Julia Child’s great-nephew.
Alex Prud’homme is a journalist and the author of numerous books, ranging in subject from crime to the environment to food. His latest book is Dinner with the President: Food, Politics, and a History of Breaking Bread at the White House.
