As America marks its 250th anniversary, in a time shaped by both deep challenges and remarkable progress, the meaning and purpose of the American experiment is worth examining now more than ever. Join Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin for a conversation with David M. Rubenstein on our nation’s extraordinary journey, from the founding ideals of 1776 to the defining moments that have tested and strengthened each generation.
Drawing on her studies of visionary leaders, including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Lyndon Johnson, Goodwin explores how leadership, civic courage, and a shared sense of purpose have guided the United States through periods of division and transformation. With a personal connection to the Revolutionary War through her own family history, Goodwin brings a unique and intimate perspective to the American story.
Doris Kearns Goodwin is a Presidential Historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of numerous works on American history. Her most recent book is An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s.
David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the host of History with David Rubenstein on PBS and the author of The Highest Calling: Conversations on the American Presidency, among other books.
