Liberation Summer: The Moment That Changed the Women’s Movement and the Future of American Politics
Non-Fiction at the Bryant Park Reading Room

Event Details:
Our popular outdoor lecture series is back! The New York Historical is thrilled to once again partner with the Bryant Park Reading Room to present a series of free programs in the park.
In 1968, the year that saw the assassinations of MLK and RFK and the escalation of the Vietnam War, another revolutionary history was developing. The Miss America Pageant in September became the site of protests by women’s liberationists as well as the first Miss Black America Pageant, mounted in response to the white-only national competition. Author Micki McElya digs deep into the background of the demonstrations, as well as the women of varying political and ideological leanings, from Betty Friedan to Phyllis Schlafly, who changed the conception of womanhood in that era.
Micki McElya is a professor at the University of Connecticut and the author, most recently, of Liberation Summer: The Moment That Changed the Women’s Movement and the Future of American Politics.
This program is produced in partnership with the Bryant Park Corporation.
