Novelists have long found the Dutch Golden Age a setting and source of inspiration. Join Russell Shorto as he talks to Victoria Redel about her new novel I Am You. The book follows the intertwined lives of Maria van Oosterwijck, renowned today for her gorgeous still life paintings, and her servant, Gerta Pieters. Find out what drew Redel to the period and how she makes us see it in a new way.
Victoria Redel is the author of 4 books of poetry and six books of fiction. Her novel I Am You (Zando/SJPLIT) was published in 2025. Victoria’s work has been widely anthologized, awarded, and translated into many languages. She teaches in the graduate and undergraduate creative writing program at Sarah Lawrence College.
Russell Shorto is the bestselling author of The Island at the Center of the World, Amsterdam, and Revolution Song. He is the director of the New Amsterdam Project at the New-York Historical Society.
Live From New Amsterdam is an ongoing series hosted by the New Netherland Institute and the New Amsterdam Project at the New-York Historical Society. Through vibrant conversations with scholars and historians, each program will investigate new and exciting research related to New Amsterdam, New Netherland, and the lasting legacies of Dutch rule in New York.
