The New York Historical Pulls Down the King George III Statue
Event Details:
Help us celebrate the 250th anniversary of New York City's memorable act of rebellion. On July 9, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read aloud in lower Manhattan. An inspired group of colonial soldiers and sailors snuck back to Bowling Green that night where they pulled down a gilded lead equestrian statue of King George III.
Stand-up comedian, New York Hysterical master of ceremonies, and certified NYC tour guide Tom Delgado hosts a short program recounting the events of that night—and how pieces of the statue ended up in The New York Historical collection.
Then, we'll destroy a life-sized replica of the King George III statue right here in the Museum. Close out your 250th celebrations with one final tribute to revolution!
