Rembrandt’s World and the Birth of New York

Event Details:
Join us for a peek behind the curtain of Old Masters, New Amsterdam, The New York Historical’s groundbreaking exhibition that brings together Dutch Golden Age art and the story of New York’s beginnings. Four hundred years ago, as Dutch settlers were establishing the tiny outpost of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, artists in the Netherlands—chief among them Rembrandt van Rijn—were transforming European painting. In this special preview conversation, curators Russell Shorto and Arthur Wheelock join The Historical’s president, Louise Mirrer, to explore how these masterpieces, many never before seen in the city, help us to imagine the Dutch colony that would become New York.
Russell Shorto is the director of the New Amsterdam Project at The New York Historical and a bestselling author whose most recent book is Taking Manhattan: The Extraordinary Events That Created New York and Shaped America. Arthur Wheelock is the Senior Advisor to The Leiden Collection and previously the curator of Northern Baroque painting at the National Gallery of Art. They are co-curators of Old Masters, New Amsterdam. Louise Mirrer (moderator) is president and CEO of The New York Historical.
