Authors Kellie Carter Jackson and Wright Thompson explore the complex past, present, and future of American racism through an examination of key moments of violence and resistance. From the brutal murder of Emmett Till to the dangerous resistance to the culture of silence cast by racial oppression, the story of race and racism in the nation’s history outlines and contextualizes the centrality of violence in American culture.
Kellie Carter Jackson is the Michael and Denise Kellen ‘68 Associate Professor of Africana Studies and the chair of the Africana Studies Department at Wellesley College. She is the author of We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance. Wright Thompson is the bestselling author of The Barn: The Secret History of a Murder in Mississippi.
