Songs of America: Piedmont Blūz
Event Details:
Spend your evenings with us this June and July! The New York Historical is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States and opening of our Tang Wing for American Democracy with live music performances. Experience country blues music with Piedmont Blūz, presented in collaboration with our friends at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo, featuring husband-and-wife Valerie and Benedict Turner, are ambassadors of 1920s and 1930s Country Blues, Piedmont-style fingerpicking, and roots percussion. Inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame in 2018, this globally touring duo goes beyond the music to deliver an immersive cultural experience. Driven by the belief that "there are stories to tell and people to remember," they weave historical commentary and captivating anecdotes into every performance to honor the vital contributions of early African-American blues artists. Beyond the stage, the Turners are dedicated educators and changemakers. They are 2024 Music to Life Juried Artists, former leaders of the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation, and Valerie is the author of a traditional fingerpicking instructional book acquired by the Library of Congress.
Support for Songs of America is provided by Diana and Don Wagner
