The Black Clown: Exploring Langston Hughes’s Legacy Through Performance

Event Details:
Join us for an evening of performance and conversation celebrating the work of Langston Hughes and the vibrant artistic legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, as explored in The New York Historical’s exhibition The Gay Harlem Renaissance.
The program will feature a performance by Davóne Tines of excerpts from the music-theater piece The Black Clown in advance of its production at Opera Philadelphia this spring. The evening will include a panel discussion with co-creators Tines and Zack Winokur, along with National Black Theatre's Jonathan McCrory, and moderated by Anthony Roth Costanzo, highlighting the intersection of music, performance, and queer cultural expression in Harlem.

Zack Winokur is a director, co-founder of the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC), and Producing Artistic Director of Little Island. Anthony Roth Costanzo (moderator) is a GRAMMY Award-winning opera singer, producer, and General Director and President of Opera Philadelphia.
