The Devil Reached Toward the Sky: An Oral History of the Making and Unleashing of the Atomic Bomb
History with David M. Rubenstein

Event Details:
What had to happen for the atomic bomb to exist? From the physicists fleeing fascism in Hitler’s Europe, to the workers who produced uranium and plutonium, to the flight crew from whom the details of their mission were kept until shortly before takeoff, the creation and use of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki took years and hundreds of thousands of people. Author Garrett M. Graff draws on oral history archives, books, letters, diaries, and more from across the US, Japan, and Europe to bring the profound creative process and its haunting aftermath to life.
Garrett M. Graff is the bestselling author of numerous books, including The Devil Reached Toward the Sky, the writer of the newsletter Doomsday Scenario, and the host of the award-winning podcast Long Shadow. David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the host of History with David Rubenstein on PBS and the author of The Highest Calling: Conversations on the American Presidency, among other books.
