The Wounded Generation: Coming Home After World War II
Leah and Michael Weisberg Series on American History

Event Details:
Following World War II, American veterans—including the likes of John F. Kennedy, Harry Belafonte, and Kurt Vonnegut—returned to their homes and families changed by the untold horrors they had witnessed and hardships they had endured. But, as historian David Nasaw demonstrates in this conversation with David M. Rubenstein, their struggles were far from over. From veterans’ PTSD—which was neither fully understood nor properly treated—to an increase in alcoholism, divorce rates, and racial tensions, the United States in the late 1940s and ’50s was far from the post-war idyll often seen in cultural representations of the era.
David Nasaw is the Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Professor of History Emeritus at the CUNY Graduate Center and the prizewinning author of The Wounded Generation: Coming Home After World War II. David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the host of History with David Rubenstein on PBS and the author of The Highest Calling: Conversations on the American Presidency, among other books.
