The Year of Flaco
- Wednesday, February 12, 2025
- $35 (Members $25)

Event Details:
In February 2023, a fierce but fluffy Eurasian eagle-owl named Flaco escaped from the Central Park Zoo and flew directly into the hearts of New Yorkers. Despite being raised in captivity and numerous attempts to capture him, Flaco not only learned to fly and hunt, but became a social media celebrity and, for many avid followers, a real New York success story. His death a year later prompted public discussions on making the city a safer place for birds and urban wildlife. In this conversation, panelists explore the legacy of the late avian underdog, in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition.
Jacqueline Emery is a wildlife photographer, the co-author of Finding Flaco: Our Year with New York City’s Beloved Owl, and chair of the English department at SUNY Old Westbury. David Lei is a photographer specializing in urban owls and the co-author of Finding Flaco. Dustin Partridge is the director of conservation and science for the NYC Bird Alliance and adjunct professor of conservation biology at Columbia University. Rebecca Klassen (moderator), Curator of Material Culture at The New York Historical, has curated and co-curated exhibitions including Fred W. McDarrah: Pride and Protest.
