Virtual Presentation: HBO's The Gilded Age—More Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy

Event Details:
Presented live on Zoom
Join historian James Nevius for an in-depth and slightly irreverent look at the HBO series The Gilded Age, now in season 3. Explore which parts of this addictive soap opera are based on real people, events, and cultural touchstones, and which are pure fantasy. Along the way, we’ll discuss Gilded Age divorces, arranged marriages, the African heritage of Newport, Rhode Island, the railroad wars, and so much more. (While familiarity with The Gilded Age will help you understand the fictional characters involved, it’s not necessary to enjoy this talk.)
Author and historian James Nevius (Inside the Apple: A Streetwise History of New York City and Footprints in New York) frequently speaks on New York City topics. Most recently at the New York Historical, he led a lecture entitled “New York and the Art Students League”.
