William Howard Taft: A Great American Life
Leah and Michael Weisberg Series on American History

Event Details:
One could argue that being president of the United States is the most impactful role an American can have in public service, but in the case of William Howard Taft, it was his work before and after the White House that were his most influential. Outside of his presidential term, Taft served as both a state and federal judge, America’s first civilian governor in the Philippines, Theodore Roosevet’s Secretary of War, and finally—after losing the 1912 presidential election—one of the most important Supreme Court chief justices in American history. Biographer Walter Stahr joins Jeffrey Rosen for a deep dive into the story and career of a man and a politician worth reexamining.
Walter Stahr is the bestselling author of several biographies on American statesmen, including William Howard Taft: A Great American Life.
Jeffrey Rosen (moderator) is law professor at George Washington University, CEO emeritus of the National Constitution Center, and the author, most recently, of The Pursuit of Liberty: How Hamilton vs. Jefferson Ignited the Lasting Battle Over Power in America.
