Our popular outdoor lecture series is back! The New York Historical is thrilled to once again partner with the Bryant Park Reading Room to present a series of free programs in the park.
Lady Bird Johnson was a staunch supporter of her husband’s career when wives had historically taken a back seat in their spouses’ political campaigns. Three months after Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act and a month before American voters would decide if they wanted to go “all the way with LBJ,” Lady Bird—a proud Texan—and a company of other women set out on a non-stop four-day train tour of the South in the hopes of garnering support for the campaign. Author Shannon McKenna Schmidt returns to the Bryant Park Reading Room to tell the story of this revolutionary operation and the women who made it happen.
Shannon McKenna Schmidt, a contributor to numerous publications and websites, is the author of You Can’t Catch Us: Lady Bird Johnson’s Trailblazing 1964 Campaign Train and the Women Who Rode with Her.
This program is produced in partnership with the Bryant Park Corporation.

This program will be held at the outdoor Reading Room in Bryant Park. The Reading Room is located on the 42nd Street side of the park between 5th and 6th Avenues. Look for the yellow and white umbrellas.
